ACODO Sustainable Farm

In September 2010 we started ACODO farm where we will grow rice, breed animals and fish to be self-sufficient in the future. It currently costs us between $108 USD each day to provide three nutritious meals to all our children at the orphanage; this is approximately 50% of our total daily operating costs. We have been looking for official sponsor since the first start-up ACODO but we find it hard. We do not want to keep asking for further support or keep our children to dance for fundraising in the future.

What the farm is going to be used for:
-  To provide food for our children in the main orphanage,
-  To provide an extra source of income through selling excess food,
-  To provide food to the 1500 orphans and vulnerable children in the 12 communities in 2011,
-  To provide vocational skills (how to do farming) to 7,500 impoverished families to be financially independent and improve their living conditions.

Some of the food will also be given to very poor children within local communities so that they can attend school. Unfortunately many children in Siem Reap are unable to attend school as they are forced into work from a very young age in order to support their families.

We currently have 9 hectares of farmland donated by our individual sponsors. The entire plot is 41 hectares; the ownership of this land will allow us to meet all of our objectives.

We have achieved about 25% so far. Although this is a significant step towards self sufficiency, in December 2012 we wish to have:

1. Digging more fish ponds

2. Water supply system throughout the whole farm $ 52,798.09 USD

2. Coops or houses for animal such as chicken, ducks, pigs, etc.

3. Dump trucks to transport the dirt from the fish ponds to make flooding barrier and fill up the lower areas along the river:

45,000.00 USD X 2 trucks = 90,000.00 USD (one truck can load 10m3 of dirt each time).

The dump trucks will also be used as part of our Indigent Family Support Programme (IFSP), targeting remote families and the extended families of children in the ACODO orphanage and communities by offering practical help, for example building fish ponds or irrigation channels on their land.

We need the above items to achieve 50% of the whole project to run the whole farm as soon as possible in this dry season so that we are not reliant on donations to pay the monthly food costs or to go on the fundraising trip to the rural villages again during the low season.

The verdant farmland, which is located 67 kilometers away from our orphanage and near a river, was carefully selected so that we can farm throughout the year. This significant benefit is reflected in the price of the land.

We employ local impoverished farmers, who are allowed to live on our land in return for a lower salary. Volunteers and visitors are always welcome to visit and work on the land.
